Thursday 11th October 2012

Tyne & Wear Young Ambassadors Conference

The Newcastle School Games Team today hosted the Young Ambassadors Conference at Benfield School, Newcastle upon Tyne on behalf of Youth Sport Trust.

Over 50 Young Ambassadors attended the event; representing schools from Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Gateshead.

The conference began with an Opening Ceremony hosted by former Olympic Gymnast Craig Heap.  Craig spoke about his journey as an elite athlete and Captain of GB's Men's Gymnastics Team.  Chris Godfrey from St Joesph's RC, Hebburn, welcomed the delegates and Philip West also from St Joseph's closed the conference by summing up the values of being a Young Ambassador.

Olympic Torchbearers Kendall Barclay, from Tyne Met College, and Will Hardy, from Heaton Manor, took part in a Question and Answer session; where the delegates had the opportunity to put questions to them regarding their Torchbearing experience.

Throughout the day the delegates attended 3 workshops; Sporting Values, Increasing Participation and Becoming a Young Ambassador delivered by Craig Heap, Steve Beharall, Ian Kendall and Jill Stacey.  Also in attendance, and assisting in the delivery of the workshops, were exisitng 'Platinum' Ambassadors from the county.

We look forward to hearing from these Young Ambassadors and how they have inspired other Sports Leaders to develop School Sport.
